THE POWER OF HYPNOSIS

A 27-year-old Swiss soldier was put under a hypnotic trance. He was made to re-enact his battle experience, where a shell exploded. He was told that a small molten piece of the shell landed on at the dorsum of his hand. As he was told this, the experimenter placed a small flat file at the dorsum of his hand. The file was at room temperature. But immediately, upon contact a blister began to form. The blister grew to be one centimeter in diameter. When the session was terminated, the soldier complained of the pain in his hand and asked if he had been burned with a cigarette.

His torture didn’t end there though. The same patient was put under hypnosis once again. This time, he was told that his right hand would remain normal while his left hand would be put under an anesthetic. In reality, no changes were made to either hand. When a medical staff, stuck a needle in the middle finger of the patient’s right hand, the soldier winced but when struck with a needle in the middle finger of his left hand, the patient didn’t feel any pain. During the same session, he was told that blisters would form on his lower-lip. The following morning, there were multiple small blisters on his lower-lip.
